Natalia Pshenichnaya, Deputy Director for Clinical and Analytical Work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, admitted the possibility of infection with West Nile fever in Russia. Her words are transmitted by RIA Novosti.
"The risks of infection in Russia cannot be excluded," she said. According to Pshenichnaya, vector mosquitoes are found in many Russian regions, with the exception of certain northern regions.
At the same time, in the first half of this year, no cases of infection were recorded in the country. In 2020, 10 cases of fever were detected in Russia, and 76 cases in 2021.
Earlier, Oksana Gisinger, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Microbiology and Virology at the Medical Institute of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), warned that the risk of contracting West Nile fever after a mosquito bite has increased in Russia. Due to the warming of the climate, the southern disease is actively spreading due to the migration of fever-infected birds to the northern countries, whose blood mosquitoes feed on.
