Title: Which Roman Empire?
Post by: A.Jenery on 09 July, 2020, 09:48:33 AM
There are still many old buildings with Roman arches, but which Roman Empire are they from?  The Roman Empire or The Holy Roman Empire?  During the HRE period there was a revival of Roman or Romanesque architecture, so my guess is that some of the newer looking one's are from the HRE.

Makes sense, the brickwork, etc on some of the one's I've seen looked too clean to be original Roman.  To be certain you can always do some online research for the building concerned.

Interesting!  The newer looking one's could also be from the Romano-British period that began more or less after the Romans pulled-out of Britain.

Roman, Romano-British, Holy Roman...  I like and04's suggestion of looking-up the building concerned.

Yep, good idea to look them up, but I still hazard a guess they're from the HRE period.  The Romano-British period is too early, wouldn't look so clean and even then only applicable to Britain as and04 suggested...

This doesn't make sense - sorry!  Both the start and end of the Romano-British era would still have been during the original Roman empire times.

Yep, you're both right.  Big oversight there on my part.

Just a bit...  That's even if you don't include the Eastern empire which continued into the 600's AD, but still well before the HRE.

Agreed!  I suppose some of the cleaner looking one's could have been from the tail-end of the Eastern empire period, but I still think most are from the HRE era.
