Well I really like the concept of Star Citizen and have been keeping tabs on it almost since it started in 2012 by regularly watching videos about it on a certain video sharing site, and I really wanted to play it years ago already but it never seemed really finished. Also there are questions in my head as to if the reality equals the rhetoric, so should I subscribe to it? Is it really that good?

I've not played myself but seriously thought of it, so was wondering the same things. Saw a few clips on YT and my impressions were that the playable area or areas isn't as vast as it might seem, but could be wrong. :-\

Plus sides for me are the amazing graphics and realism, down sides are that a lot of the game features are cleverly arranged backdrops or eye candy you can't actually do anything with according to some I know that play anyawayz :-X

I agree with both points here. The main areas like Hurston and others are very large life-like sandboxes made up of physical 3d models (prob obj and similar) and avatars (your character, spacecraft, NPCs) surrounded by procedural distant landscapes and scenery. That's my impression going by what I've gleaned from their own website.

Yea, large sandboxed instances makes sense! Reminds me a bit of what one of the biggest MMOs was like when it first came out in 03!

Most mmorpgs/mmos use these techniques I think, but distant backdrops don't have to be procedural. :-X

True, but then the sandboxed areas would have to be truly vast otherwise you'd either run into a big wall or your AV would end up floating in a blacked-out nowhere area. I've done both ::)

Thanks everyone for your take on the game - and sorry for late reply... I think I'll wait and see how SC develops before deciding either way. :-\

Having seen just a few video clips on youtube and looking at their site just once years ago, I don't know that much about it, but for me the two main things would be how well the game economy is developed and how many actually play it at any one time.

According to one of the SER's on you-know-where, two million have invested in the game which probably means about 10% actively play. Of that only 10% again may be in it at the same time, so 20,000. Even that's prob optimistic! :-X

Right, but 20,000 buying and selling stuff isn't bad. :-\

Just realised the mistake on my first post which is that Star Citizen started in 2012, not 2011! :P
