OK, so I need some extra shelves for my office but they can't be floor standing as there's no more room on the floor and also don't want to bang holes in the walls, but have heard that there are magnetic solutions. Anyone heard of this, would it work, be safe?

I once saw something like that. It was a large sheet of thin steel painted white with about a foot at the bottom bent 90-degrees for the floor support and about three or so box units were secured to the upright with glued-on magnets. It was approx' six feet tall from the floor and about three foot wide.

Well snap! I use something very similar to this only the metal sheet is secured to the wall with strips of hook and loop tape, it's very stable and hasn't given way once! 8)

Flip, isn't there a danger you put something too heavy and valuable on it and the shelf gives way and - oops smash! :-X

Not if the magnets were very strong like neodyms. I think this is a great idea. 8)
