Title: Would we be effected if Betelgeuse went supernova
Post by: Susan.W on 22 June, 2023, 09:03:50 AM
There's been quite a bit said about Betelgeuse in the Orion star system possibly going supernova, but would it effect us and how?

Really interesting you brought this up.  Don't know much about cosmos stuff, but going by a certain wiki site Betelgeuse is about 562 light-years away, so might not notice much.

If I remember correctly, going by what my physics professor said a long time ago, a supernova isn't like a bomb going off or a grenade, but a gradual expansion over many years.  So any after effects we receive will probably be very minor, nothing more than a slight change in the weather.

Yes, something like that.  Certainly won't light-up the night sky. :-X
