Which Pompei disaster?

The first known or recorded Mount Vesuvius eruption was AD79 which covered Pompei in ash, but there have been many Mount Vesuvius eruptions since then of equal magnitude, so how do they know which Pompei disaster was the cause of discovered petrified remains?

One method is radio carbon dating although they say this isn't fool-proof, but certainly a good question.  Apparently parts of Pompei were rediscovered as late as the 18th and 19th centuries!

A very good question indeed!  If parts of it were discovered that relatively late then chances are it was covered again by fallout from more recent Vesuvius activity and not so much from the AD79 eruption.

Would be interesting to know what was done with the Pompei remains from the AD79 one.  Were they left as they were?  Were they moved?
