Why are these pyramids so similar?

A pyramid in Cambodia is very similar to one in Yucatan even though they're many thousands of miles apart, so how can this be?

Similar, but the one in Yucatan seems a bit bigger and predates the one in Cambodia by 200 years.  Still bit of a mystery though.

Yes fairly similar, although the one in Yucatan is less barren and rock strewn.
