Title: Found new mmo called Star Atlas
Post by: cybernut on 02 January, 2022, 09:59:27 AM
Seems there's another mmo/mmorpg that has a real cash economy or RCE called Star Atlas.  Don't know too much about it yet and haven't signed-up to it, but here's some links:-

Star Atlas website newsroom (https://staratlas.com/newsroom)

Trailer for the game (https://staratlas.com/#trailer)

Just had a good look at it also including some vids on a tube site.  Seems you need a crypto wallet to sign-up to it though. :-\

Looks like a very interesting game.  Four wallets are fully supported, another three have limited support - but if you don't have a wallet at all, I suppose you can't play...

Nice presentation but a little wary of anything that would show off a pretty website and connect itself to crypto/NFTs. I realise that could be a bit foot shooting but there's been so many of this sort of thing going on it's pretty much a cookie cutter scam now to pay someone to make a fancy credible looking website for something that looks too good to be true then see who you can get to buy stuff for/related to it in advance of any game code ever being written. I mean, just look at how many spaceships for star citizen were sold on nothing more than a fancy painting.

Interested but will only keep a casual and cautious eye on.

According to this info (https://play.staratlas.com)(click on 'game overview' beneath 'connect wallet' button then scroll down to Inventory) the crypto wallet is used as an in-game inventory, but they could have done an ordinary API for that. It's also indeed very Star Citizen-ish, in that there's an out-of-game market place for spacecraft and such.

Looks to me like a crypto/cryengine-scam and not a real scifi game. What we have here are some convincing 3d cgi mock-ups. Anyone expecting an actual game to ever materialise I suspect will be sorely disappointed alas. It has all the hallmarks... let's face it, if someone was actually developing a space game here... they'd have more to show for it than a fancy website.

What I'm starting to think maybe, but will have a small punt on next ship sale (few opal jets to start $20 each), see if what i been told by people already with ships tallies with my experience. I'll even put something up here so people can follow what happens :D, but low cost to see.

Total fleets deployed: 63,204
Total Value Locked: $ 100,358,841

Those figures though on their discord made me look a little harder, will post more as i find.

Certainly a wise head is needed here, will look at their discord to see what's what.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get all the fuss and fandango about the crypto-coin/NFT hype. The ICOs done by MA and ND were purely hot air. Anyone dumb enough to throw their money at that is lucky if they get anything back. The way the whole thing was "marketed" at the time was a random forum where people who were absolutely clueless about MindArk were simply parroting one another and hyping things up.

It reminds me of WallStreetBets somehow. Or the other way around.

I hope this fad will soon be done. Too many unscupulous people taking advantage of people. I'm starting to lean the same way towards Kickstarter nowadays. I got a couple of amazing things from there, but was also burned on more than one occassion where a project was succesfully funded, and then the creators simply ran. Kickstart at the same time claims innocence but gets to keep their share of the money that was scammed.

TLDR: People suck.

I'm coming from a similar perspective in terms of years, but I found the concept interesting.

I posted a be careful message in OP, as like i said have little solid info at moment and would by no means re-mortgage my house for it :D .
If able i will maybe throw in a few $ and post here and see what happens lol.... for science :D .

Was involved (to say the least) with something like that a loooong time ago. Crypto cats or crypto kittens I think it was. It was something about buying cats, who then could produce offspring with legendary stats if you were lucky. It sounded fun, yet it was designed as a pure money sink. Sort of like a particular MMO you might have heard of.

Know what you mean, there's too many crypto/nft money grabbing things out there, but I just think this type of format could go some and there's a fair number coming to the fore already, so worth investigating.

Like your representation of how Star Atlas works and couldn't agree with it more. Ppl will probably be waiting years for an actual playable game just like for SCitizen.

Mmm might be worth trying it out, providing you go in with your eyes open and speculate what you expect to loose in return for the education/experience. And indeed would be interesting to hear about it later.

That's what I did with that guy in Entropia who did the pyramid scam many years ago. I played it sensible though, doubled my (very small amount of) money and got out. That scam is built on people going "oh wow, lets do it again, here have even more money" so walking early is the way to go to avoid the eventual collapse. Same with the Anshe Chung Dreamland Stock Exchange. I only put in a small amount, enough for me to have a play and learn something. Of course I lost it but I think I gained more in knowledge/experience through trying something new out.

TBH I probably should look at crypto some time (just for the knowledge/experience) and all things related to it... but I have enough hobbies and many other things interest me more. So I don't think I'll be personally going there any time soon.

Certainly... at the moment... I comparing everything to chopping red and blue cubes in half with lightsabers... and the lightsabers are kinda winning most of the time ^_^**

Hmm, setup my own ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) mining rig to mine ethereum in first qtr of 2021. Basically three USB ASIC stick modules @ 330mh/s plugged into a powered USB hub and a USB fan to keep the miners cool. But I soon realised I was just scratching at the walls, having made just 30-odd US$ in nearly two months of continuous usage, and the constant noise of the fan was just driving me nuts.

Reminds me of someone I knew who bought a bigger ASIC miner and also some USB ones. She put them through their paces for a while and I believe made back the cost but in 6 months they were just used to pile stuff on physically.

Sounds familiar, but for me the 30-odd US$ wasn't clear profit once I factored in the electric cost, plus the usb hub used to get fairly warm even with the fan.

Are you using a quest1/2?
You doing just the stock/and purchase tracks, or have you explored sideloading from sidequest and beastsaber?

I've not explored sideloading/sidequest with Quest2 yet. Mainly because I haven't had to, having just bought the game and headset. Plenty to explore... much like my time in Entropia, I'm in no rush to try it all (opposite of a friend who got one at the same time and seems to want to try everything immediately - maybe I'm just happy with my simple pleasures of chopping blocks in half!). I hear there's even a VR MMO coming. That could be interesting.

Agreed on both counts!!  At MsLeon, not too long ago I discovered this mmorpg on oculus (https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/2352932654734987/").
Graphics aren't that great, but it has fighting, melee, spells, gathering, crafting, grouping for harder monsters, voice chat, etc.... If I was younger (or older?) and had lots of time, I would have explored it more.

Hmm - not a lot of knowhow on that one as I've barely looked at that store, but that is the one I was thinking of. It just did a release day trailer (which is later this month). The cooking looks fun. And you can order drinks at the bar.... eat your heart out MA, although I understand they expect a shipment soon... ,-)

It's like a cross between WoW, SL and one or two others with added VR, and also reminds me of one of my pancake making days, except the pan detached itself from the handle and the pancake ended up stuck on the ceiling.

Yeh I wonder about that. Historically I've encountered sickness issues only 5 times. With the Rift DK2 I found if the camera lost you, you loose lateral movement tracking, and that was a little nauseating. On a racing sim in town, spinning out made me feel pretty ill (cause I wasn't actually spinning myself). At Zero Latency (VR place where you can walk about) there was a lift in the zombie game that didn't agree with me. After that I just closed my eyes when I went on it. Again, issue was going up in VR and not going up IRL. I think I had a slight nausea in Elite inside a spinning space station and the worst time was when I tried to make my own VR content, messed up movement/controls, thought I could handle the nausea, then got so sick I had to go and walk around outside for half and hour to feel better.

With the new headset I've not tried much that involves moving around large areas yet (just something called VARK which had a small area you could move about in - and even that did something weird with rotation - kinda made it fixed amount and instant) I've seen there are lots of different movement methods in other games. One I've been looking at videos of online seems to be a bit like how we used to be able to move in Entropia (click on the landscape) but instead of gradually moving there it just instantly teleports. I found that a little trying to watch others do on youtube... dunno how I'd find it in VR.

I've known some of these nauseating issues with VR as well.  You experience something mentally but don't get the physical feedback that you would in RL.
